Engenhos do Norte

In Porto da Cruz, on Madeira's north coast, the Engenhos do Norte distillery has been perpetuating the art of agricultural rum making since 1927. Bought by the Faria family in 2013, it combines heritage and modernity, between its impressive steam mill - the last still in operation in Europe - and its traditional methods, from fermentation in cement vats to distillation in a Charentais still. More than a production site, it's a veritable living museum that embodies the spirit of the island: deeply rooted in its history, but always looking to the future.
