Arturo Fuente was founded in Florida in 1912 by a 24-year-old Cuban immigrant. Growth and recognition were rapid. By 1924, Arturo Fuente was employing 500 people, rolling tobacco exclusively from Cuba. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the entire factory. This tragedy brought the business to a halt for 22 years, until 1946. At the end of the Second World War, Arturo Fuente relaunched the business, first in his garage and soon joined by his sons Carlos and Arturo, Jr. Growth was slow, and Fuente cigars were finding it difficult to find a market. In 1958, Arturo Fuente decided to close the business and sell it to his son. The latter was soon faced with the Cuban embargo, which prevented him from importing tobacco. In 1970, after several trials of different tobaccos, production moved to Esteli in Nicaragua. Unfortunately, the revolution caused him to lose his factory in 1979, which was burnt to the ground. Still determined to continue the brand, Carlos Fuente mortgaged his house and reinvested in a factory in the Dominican Republic. In 1980, a new factory was built in Santiago. Success came quickly. A large number of smokers were won over by the quality of production. Today, Arturo Fuente produces over 30 million cigars a year, including the Opus X cigar range, considered by many critics to be one of the most accomplished cigar ranges.
