The Romeo y Julieta brand was founded in Havana in 1875 by two Spaniards, Inocensio Alvarez Rodriguez and José Manin Garcia. Thirty years later, the factory was taken over by José Rodriguez, known as "Don Pepin", who developed the brand considerably, particularly in export markets, going so far as to buy the Capuletà Palace in Verona, where he set up a cigar store.
Until the Second World War, Romeo y Julieta distinguished itself by producing mainly "figurados", cigars rolled to a point at both ends, and personalizing the ring, so that anyone could have cigars made in their name.
