H. Upmann Cigars
H. Upmann cigars are produced exclusively from tobacco harvested in the Vuelta Abajo region and handmade. The H. Upmann brand was founded in 1844 and is one of the oldest brands of cigars.
In 1844, German banker Herman Upmann opened an office in Havana, allowing him to send cigars to his home in Europe. Upmann sensed the business opportunity and invested in a cigar company in 1844, launching the H. Upmann brand at the same time. His bank disappeared in the 1920s, but the cigar brand continued.
Upmann is often credited with selling cigars in cedar boxes. Thus, some of these boxes identified as “H. Upmann” were used by other cigar manufacturers before the Upmann launched their company.
By the end of the 19th century, the H. Upmann brand had already received several international awards, including seven gold medals. An image of these adorn the brand’s cigar boxes.
